    Understanding Fire Pit Safety

Fire pits make great outdoor features. They provide warmth, allow for cooking, and offer a natural gathering spot. However, fire safety should be the topmost concern when using a fire pit. A crucial part of fire safety is knowing how to extinguish a fire pit correctly.

    Initial Precautions

Before starting a fire, clear the surrounding area of any flammable materials. Check if the fire pit has a spark screen. This will protect against flying sparks. Also, keep a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher close by in case of emergencies.

How to Extinguish a Fire Pit

Knowing how to safely put out a fire is an essential skill for anyone who uses a fire pit. Follow the below steps:

Step 1: Let it Burn Out

Allow the fire to burn down on its own whenever possible. The best way to extinguish a fire pit safely is by not feeding it. Stop adding wood or fuel when ready to extinguish the fire and let it burn down.

    Step 2: Spread Out Embers

Once the fire is down to embers, use a long-handled poker to spread them out within the fire pit, allowing them to cool down faster.

    Step 3: Douse in Water

Slowly pour water over the embers. It is crucial to do it slowly because adding water too quickly may produce hot steam that can cause burns. Keep pouring until you hear no more hissing sounds.

    Step 4: Stir the Ashes

After the embers cool down, stir the ashes and embers with a poker. Check for any missed embers or hotspots.

    Step 5: Touch Test

Wait at least 20 minutes and then cautiously move your hand, palm down, near the ashes. Do not touch the ashes. If you can still feel heat, repeat the water and stirring process.

    Fire Pit Cleanup After Extinguishing

You also need to clean up after extinguishing a fire pit. The ash leftovers are beneficial for composting. So, transfer the cool ashes into a metal container and keep it outside, away from any structures for a few days before using for composting. Irrespective of the fire pit you have, proper maintenance is essential to keep it looking good and working well.

    Staying Safe While Having Fun

A fire pit is a great way to enjoy an outdoor environment. But it is crucial to respect the element of fire and take necessary precautions to ensure everyone’s safety. Use quality fire pits, follow the steps outlined above, and you will end up with an evening free of incidents, filled with good memories. You can find a range of suitable fire pits for sale that are designed with safety and functionality in mind.

Remember, extinguishing a fire pit safely is not an option but a mandatory practice. Taking the time to do it correctly can prevent accidents and make your fire pit experience a more enjoyable one.
