How to Extend the Life of Your Washer: Maintenance Tips That Actually Work

Frances Freeman August 6, 2026 3 minutes read

A washing machine runs harder than almost any other appliance in the house, cycling through water, detergent, and heavy loads week after week. With a little regular care, most washers can run reliably for a decade or more — but skip the basics, and you’re likely looking at breakdowns, mold, and a shorter lifespan. The good news is that the habits that keep a washer running well don’t take much time; they just need to become routine.

Simple Habits That Add Years to Your Washer

Start with the door seal and detergent drawer. Front-load washers in particular trap moisture around the rubber gasket, which is the leading cause of musty odors and mold buildup. Wiping the seal dry after each cycle and leaving the door cracked open between loads lets it air out properly.

Overloading is another habit worth breaking. Cramming in one more towel might feel efficient, but it puts extra strain on the motor, bearings, and suspension system, and it usually means clothes don’t get properly clean anyway. Leaving enough room for water and detergent to circulate freely goes a long way toward preventing premature wear.

It’s also worth checking the water supply hoses every few months for cracks, bulges, or stiffness, since a burst hose is one of the most common causes of water damage in a home. Rubber hoses should generally be replaced every five years, even if they look fine. Finally, make sure the machine is level — a washer that rocks during the spin cycle wears out its internal components far faster than one sitting flat and stable.

Using the right amount of detergent matters more than most people realize, too. Too much soap leaves residue that builds up inside the drum and hoses, which can eventually affect drainage and performance. A monthly cleaning cycle, run empty with hot water or a washer-cleaning tablet, helps clear out that buildup before it becomes a problem. These same principles apply to your refrigerator as well; a technician who handles refrigerator repair in Stamford, CT can catch small problems, like a failing gasket, before they become expensive ones.

None of these habits take more than a few minutes, but together they add up to real savings — fewer repair calls, lower water and energy bills, and a machine that simply lasts longer. Staying ahead of small maintenance tasks is almost always cheaper and easier than dealing with a breakdown after the fact, and it’s the difference between a washer that lasts eight years and one that lasts fifteen.
