Top Myths About Root Canal Therapy Debunked

Frances Freeman March 7, 2026 2 minutes read

    Introduction

Root canal therapy has earned a reputation for being painful and scary, leading to numerous myths surrounding it. However, the reality is quite different. This article aims to debunk common misconceptions about root canal therapy.

Myth 1: Root Canals are Painful

One of the most prevalent misconceptions is that root canal procedures are extremely painful. This myth likely stems from the fact that in the past, before modern advancements in dental technology and anesthetics, such procedures may have indeed entailed significant pain. Today, however, the pain from a severe toothache often exceeds the discomfort experienced during the procedure itself.

Myth 2: Root Canals Cause Illness

There’s a persistent notion that root canal therapy can lead to illnesses like heart disease, arthritis, or even cancer. This myth is based on long-debunked research dated back to the early 1900s. Multiple scientific studies since then have found no connection between root canal treatment and disease elsewhere in the body.

Myth 3: Pulling the Tooth is a Better Option

Another common myth is that it’s preferable to have a troublesome tooth extracted rather than go through a root canal. Tooth extraction is a more severe procedure and may lead to issues such as bone loss in the jaw and shifting of other teeth. Moreover, a missing tooth would need to be replaced, most likely with dental implants in Staten Island. A root canal allows you to keep your natural tooth in place.

Myth 4: Root Canals Require Numerous Appointments

Many people think that a root canal is a long, drawn-out process requiring a series of appointments. While this may have been true in the past, modern techniques often allow dentists to complete root canal therapy in just one or two visits.

Myth 5: Root Canals are Not Very Successful

Contrary to popular belief, root canal therapy has a high rate of success. According to the American Association of Endodontists, root canal treatment has a success rate of over 95 percent. Many teeth fixed with a root canal can last a lifetime.

    Conclusion

Hopefully, this article helps clear up the cloud of misinformation surrounding root canal therapy. Always remember that it’s crucial to consult with your dentist or endodontist for accurate information about dental procedures, as they can dispel any unfounded fears or misconceptions you may have.
